Character Development

I have read a few articles that suggest you should develop your character before working on your short story or novel.

Sometimes I like to write as I go along, since my story inspires some of my characters; while sometimes I like to build my character from the ground up.

It goes without saying that the gender can be determined without having to establish your likes and dislikes of your character as well as the physical appearance and attributes.

I also think it depends on how long your story is going to be.  If it’s important to get the bearings of your story well under way, then developing your character afterwards may be to your benefit.  In such a case, the storyline will almost help you to determine what character you need to set in place.

Let me know your thoughts.  Do you complete the full profile of your character before you start writing your story or do you build your charcter as you go along?
